The Box Music Television You Control
Remember that great slogan, The Box Music Television You Control. How can you not? If you grew up in the 90’s its probably a safe bet that you spent a lot of hours watching “The Box” waiting patiently for your favorite video to be played because we all know nobody wanted to spend that dollar to see it.
For those who don’t quite remember, “The Box” was a jukebox style music channel that shuffled through lists of music videos and for a small fee one could call up and request there favorite videos. I don’t know about you but I personally never paid for a video. I, like most other people I knew would just wait it out for someone else to request one but that’s what made it fun also because you never knew what was coming next. Sometimes though, videos would play non stop. I always wondered who is actually paying money for these. Looking back now there were probably a lot of pissed off parents back in the 90’s. Kids would probably run when that phone bill came in.
In the 90’s, The Box was a force to be reckoned with, as it went head to head with Mtv. Other than VH1, which was mainly corny soft adult rock back then, The Box was Mtv’s only real competition. Many could argue that The Box was better. I always found The Box played videos that Mtv didn’t seem to play a lot of, which is one thing that definitely made them better.
Unfortunately, The Box’s run of the 90’s would come to an end as it turned into Mtv2. So clearly we know who the winner of that battle was. It was nice back when you could turn on a music channel and actually hear music and enjoy videos. The world needs a new Box.
